This Herb Balances Hormones and Eases Bloating (Recipe Inside)

Last week, I had a patient who had tried every synthetic supplement under the sun for PMS - but nothing brought her relief without side effects. So I suggested something ancient: a warm tea made from a plant her great-grandmother likely brewed without ever knowing the term “hormonal imbalance.”

Today, I’m sharing that same gentle remedy with you - plus the science behind how it works, and a printable you can keep in your kitchen.

Featured Herb: Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)

Medical Uses (Evidence-Based):

  • Reduces bloating & gas (carminative)

  • Balances estrogen levels — contains phytoestrogens (anethole, fenchone)

  • Helps with menstrual cramps (mild antispasmodic)

  • Shown to improve milk production in breastfeeding mothers (galactagogue)

  • Supports digestion and appetite regulation

 Mechanism of Action:

  • Phytoestrogens in fennel bind to estrogen receptors, helping regulate hormonal activity without the risks of synthetic hormone therapy.

  • The essential oils (anethole, fenchone, estragole) help relax intestinal muscles → reducing bloating and cramping.

  • Mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects make it ideal for gut health and immune support.

Safety & Precautions:

  • Generally safe when consumed in food/tea amounts

  • Avoid high doses during pregnancy unless approved by a provider

  • Use cautiously if you have hormone-sensitive conditions (e.g., breast cancer, PCOS)

  • May interact with estrogen therapy or blood thinners (consult your doctor)
